Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT 3) Extends The Frontier Of Connectivity To Klang Valley’s Western Corridor

SHAH ALAM – AUG 24, 2016: Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3), Klang Valley’s newest urban rail project in the Western Corridor of the capital city, was launched today by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Razak at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam.

The 37 kilometre long rail alignment will provide accessibility to commuters in Klang, Shah Alam, and Petaling Jaya and will also integrate five of its stations to existing and new transportation networks.

The LRT3 will be able to transport more passengers compared to other modes of transportation available in Western Klang Valley at the rate of 36,720 passengers per direction per hour.

Construction work on the line is scheduled to begin in early 2017 and is expected to be completed by Aug 31, 2020 with a capped cost of RM9 billion.
The LRT3 project is owned by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, which owns and manages the current LRT and monorail networks as well as bus services in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Kuantan.

Speaking at the launch, Tan Sri Ismail Adam, Chairman of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad said the project was expected to bring significant connectivity and mobility to the people between Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang.

The LRT3 project received more than 90% support from close to 7,300 people who shared their feedback on the proposed alignment during the three-month long public display between May and August 2015.

The joint venture company, MRCB George Kent Sdn Bhd (MRCB GK) was appointed as the Project Delivery Partner (PDP) for the LRT3 alignment by Prasarana in September 2015.

The pre-qualification stage of competitive tendering was completed in May 2016, resulting in 96 of the 124 tenderers shortlisted.

Once completed, the LRT3 project will have 26 stations, spanning 37km, including one underground station. Five of the stations would be integrated with existing or new transit lines.

With the integration in place, LRT3 is expected to reduce traffic congestions, increase work mobility and create new employment opportunities within the Klang Valley upon its completion in the year 2020.
